During the summer of 2024, I participated in a symposium organized by Fundacja Jaw Dikh in Rzepiska, Poland. The works presented here draw inspiration from roadside chapels found throughout the region, built by local residents in front of their homes as gestures of devotion and spiritual protection. I became interested in these structures as symbolic counterparts to the house: while a home provides physical shelter, the chapels offer a promise of protection rooted in belief, reassurance, and emotional stability. They function as talismans, material objects invested with care and hope. My work focuses on their physical forms. Stripped of religious iconography and context, their silhouettes become ambiguous, resembling dollhouses, bird feeders, cabinets, or objects without a clear function. Arrows incorporated into the structures suggest direction and guidance, yet their destination remains uncertain. They point somewhere, but offer no indication of where to go. This ambiguity reflects broader existential conditions of navigating without guarantees, where choosing a path does not necessarily mean knowing its destination. Detached from their original religious function, the structures retain the potential to evoke hope, calm, and fellowship. By removing prescribed belief systems, the works leave room for viewers to project their own meanings onto these forms, allowing them to become vessels for reflection and shared experience.
